Wayne Rooney was reportedly forced to take an emergency coronavirus test amid fears he caught the virus from an infected friend who visited his home last week.

According to The Sun, the Derby captain was left ‘angry’ after Josh Bardsley, 27, walked into his multi-million pound mansion to deliver him a luxury watch last Thursday.

This despite the fact that he had been contacted by Test and Trace in the previous days – and he has since tested positive for Covid-19, raising concerns that Rooney could have been infected.

The former England star, who was then unaware of Bardsley’s positive test, continued to play for Derby in Friday night’s loss to Watford.

Fear of Covid could mean Rooney has to miss Derby’s next four games, while his wife Coleen might not be able to take her children on vacation during their mid-term break.

In a statement to the Sun, Rooney, 34, said his health, as well as that of his family and teammates, had been put at risk by someone acting against government directives.

His spokesperson said: ‘Wayne briefly met Josh Bardsley when he visited Wayne’s house on Thursday.

Josh or anyone else told Wayne neither before nor during this visit that Josh had been asked to take a coronavirus test.

“ If he had known that Josh had been contacted by Track and Trace or had tested positive, he would have refused to see him.

Wayne is angry and disappointed that he, his family and his club have been placed in this position by someone acting covertly and in violation of government and NHS guidelines. He is now taking a coronavirus test following his contact with Josh. ”

According to government guidelines, people must self-isolate for 14 days if contacted by Test and Trace.

Wayne Rooney’s full management statement

Wayne briefly met Josh Bardsley when he visited Wayne’s house on Thursday.

Josh or anyone else told Wayne neither before nor during this visit that Josh had been asked to take a coronavirus test.

“ It was only today following media approaches and his own investigations that Wayne learned that Josh had been contacted by Test and Trace prior to the visit and should not have come to his home.

Wayne also found out today that Josh had subsequently tested positive for Covid-19.

If he had known that Josh had been contacted by Track and Trace or had tested positive, he would have refused to see him.

Likewise, had he been informed that he had been in contact with anyone suspected of having the virus, he would have immediately informed his clubs as required by the rules.

Wayne is angry and disappointed that he, his family and his club have been placed in this position by someone acting secretly and in violation of government and NHS guidelines.

“ He is now taking a coronavirus test following his contact with Josh. ”

The Championship club issued a statement in the early hours of Sunday, which read: ‘On being informed of this news, the club ensured that the appropriate action was taken in accordance with strict EFL COVID-19 protocols and UK government guidelines, which the club operates under.

The club will continue to adhere to COVID-19 rules and protocols to ensure the safest possible environment is provided for its players and staff.

“The club will not make any further comment unless a further update is required on this matter.”

MailOnline approached Bardsley for comment.

The former Manchester United striker posed for photos with his new watch on Bardsley’s Avant Garde Global business Instagram account.

Bardsley wrote: “Level Up… What a treat! Manchester United’s all-time top scorer. England’s all-time top scorer. Thanks for the business and good fun.

Rooney replied, “Nice guys.”

Rooney has to wait to see the result of his test but could now be a major doubt for Derby’s next four games against Huddersfield, Nottingham Forest, Cardiff and Bournemouth.

In March, Rooney said the government and football authorities were treating players like “ guinea pigs ” by allowing games to continue initially as the coronavirus outbreak accelerated.

He even said he would consider retiring if his wife or children fell ill because he caught the virus after continuing to play football.

However, in April Rooney was cleared by police after he was seen walking with Manchester City defender and neighbor Kyle Walker, despite the coronavirus lockdown.

Neighbors in Cheshire both walked the Prestbury Golf Course with their families – flouting the rules of only dating your own households.

Rooney’s former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo was also recently forced to self-isolate after testing positive for Covid-19.

Former British star David Beckham also caught the virus after a trip to the United States.
