Cougar stalked hiker Kyle Burgess for six terrifying minutes on Saturday afternoon
On several occasions the cougar leapt forward to push Burgess away
“Really, I didn’t know what they were, and I would usually pull out my phone like, ‘Oh cool animals,’ he said.
“ Once I realized what they were I was like, it’s mom right there. I’m screwed, ” he told Fox 13.
Burgess had started filming when the mother arrived and continued to record as she approached and he started to back away.
In the six-minute Instagram clip, a terrified Burgess swears and yells at the cougar to try to scare him.
Despite his panic, he remembered to back away slowly and tried to make himself as tall as possible.
The cougar approached him as he began to jump towards him with his claws at about three minutes.
‘No! No! Go away! Go away please!’ Burgess screams as the animal rushes forward.
“Come on man! I don’t want to die today! he adds.
Burgess said he had watched YouTube videos before on how to react in such a situation and on several occasions he tried to grab something to throw but the cougar would jump forward every time he tried. .
Burgess was finally able to reach out and grab a rock to throw at the cougar, sending him back on the run to his cubs.
“So yes, it just happened … holy cow.” Yeah, I’m not coming back that way, ”Burgess says at the end of the video, as he shows his shaking hand as he sits on the floor to recuperate.
He stayed there for another half an hour before calming down enough to make the three kilometer trip into the canyon.,

Burgess shared the terrifying video to Instagram on Sunday
He sat on the path for 30 minutes as he recovered from the shock
Burgess said he still couldn’t believe this had happened and it was ‘very long 6 minutes’
“ I was thinking for sure ‘this will hurt, it won’t be fun’ especially all those times she throws herself at me a little bit, ” he said on Monday, adding that he didn’t still couldn’t believe it had happened thinking it was a dream.
“It was a very long 6 minutes.
Burgess also reported the sighting to the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, but two state conservation officers did not locate the cougar and her cubs when they checked the area on Sunday.
“ It’s a great reminder that we are not alone out there, ” said Scott Root, the division’s outreach manager, adding that the video was “ alarming ” and “ kind of scary video to watch ”.
“She wanted to make sure he wasn’t a threat. She let him know very well that you had to get out of here, and he did, ” he said.
Root believes Burgess handled the situation in the best possible way.
“He didn’t turn around and run which was the right thing. He made a lot of noise; he didn’t crouch down or do anything to get smaller. We want to look big, so basically he did really well, ”he said.
“I really admire that he did everything right.
