Detectives investigating the murder of an 88-year-old widower in a quiet village have arrested a man on suspicion of murder.

& # 39; Lovely chap & # 39; Dennis Kellond died of a head injury and his body was found Monday by his son Peter in a tragedy that shocked the small local community of Godstone, Surrey.

Peter visited his father after he was alerted to a possible problem by a female neighbor who said the retiree's back door had been left open for more than 24 hours.

Surrey Police announced this afternoon that a 41-year-old man from Lingfield has been arrested and is currently in custody.

East Surrey Chief Inspector Alan Sproston said: & # 39; The latest development in this study should be something to assure the local community that we are doing everything we can to find out what has happened and those who are not responsible have been identified for this heinous crime and brought to justice.

& # 39; Our thoughts at this time remain with Mr Kellond's family, which is not supported by specialist officers. & # 39;

Mr. Kellond lived alone in Godstone after his wife died and his death shook the village during the Covid 19 lockdown.

Local minister Peter O & # 39; Connell of St Nicholas Church paid tribute to Mr Kellond, who he said was an active part of & # 39; was a community.

He said, & # 39; You kind of expect that if there are absolutely horrible things in & # 39; if the world happens, it will be nothing here and especially not for someone who is 88 and not a threat to anyone. & # 39;

Mr. Kellond was also known as an avid fan of the ballgame pet game, and a GoFundMe initiative has been set up to raise money to nominate a show in honor of his memory.

A female neighbor, in her 70s, said the suspected murder was a & # 39; stain & # 39; followed by burglaries in the area – with burglars who probably wore Hazmat suits.

Yesterday, Public Surrey Police said Mr Kellond had died of a head injury.

A spokeswoman added that teams of officers conducting home-to-home surveys, forensics and search units have conducted detailed investigations, and detectives continue to investigate people.

Officers also set up patrols in & # 39; area to provide reassurance to & # 39; e local community.

Neighbors revealed that earlier Burglars wearing hazmat suits had hit four houses in the village, days just before Mr Kellond's body was found.

One woman said: & # 39; According to the police, it & # 39; s everyone is home so they do not break into houses but die instead. That's the theory of & # 39; the police in any case. & # 39;

Detectives from a major two-county crime team were called to carry out investigations around the crime scene while hunting for the murderer or murderers of the & # 39; s pensioner.

In a higher appeal on Wednesday, Chief Inspector Alan Sproston called on anyone with any information or video to come forward.

He said, & # 39; First, I want to reassure the local community that we are doing everything we can to find out what happened and identify and bring to justice those who are responsible for this heinous crime.

& # 39; Our thoughts currently remain with his family and friends who are not supported by specialist officers. & # 39;
